Aadi Story

Day-1

Sri Mookambika resides at Kollur on the banks of the river Souparnika amidst the Kutajadri hills. She is Adi Parashakti, the slayer of the demon Muka, hence called Mookambika. Kola Maharshi performed severe penance here in front of a Shiva Linga and prayed for the darshan of Shiva and Devi together. Devi manifested herself in the form of a golden line running along the centre of the lingam. It is this lingam that we see in front of the image of Mookambika in the temple. She appeared in front of Adi Sankara here in answer to His prayers and promised to travel to Kerala with Him provided He did not look back even once. On the way the sound of Her anklets stopped and He looked back. Devi stopped right there but promised Him that She would visit Chottanikkara every morning. Adi Sankara then installed Her in a temple. The spot where He performed penance is behind the Srikovil of Sri Mookambika and the gate to that spot is opened at specific times. Let us pray to Mookambika for the welfare of all.
