Aadi Story

Day-21

The Chamundeshwari Devi temple at Mysore is one of the most ancient temples of India. It is regarded as a Shakti Peetha, where the hair of Devi Sati is believed to have fallen. The idol of Chamundeshwari is believed to have been established by Sage Markandeya, the great immortal or 'Chiranjeevi', and a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Devi here is worshipped as 'Mahishasuramardhini'. The city of Mysore is believed to have derived its name from 'Mahishasura'. It was initially called 'Mahishuru', later 'Mahisuru' and finally 'Maisuru' in the Kannada language. Chamundeshwari, residing at the top of the Chamundi Hills, is the family deity of the Wodeyars, the former rulers of Mysore. May Sri Chamundeshwari bless us all.
