Aadi Story

Day-31

Sri Kunnekattu Bhagavathi resides at Thennilapuram in Palakkad district. The legend goes that an ardent devotee of Sri Kodungallur Bhagavathi from this village used to visit Her temple every year but as he grew older it became difficult for him to travel. On his way back home from one such trip, he stopped to rest at a place on a small hilltop, overgrown with weeds. When he got up, he was not able to take out his umbrella because it was stuck to the ground. Afraid that Devi was angry with him for thinking about not travelling to Kodungallur every year due to advancing age, he called out to Devi. To his pleasant surprise, he heard Devi's voice saying that she was pleased with his devotion and would henceforth reside at the hilltop. The installation rites were duly completed. There is also a legend behind the huge teak tree in the temple compound. It was sold to a timber merchant along with many other trees many years ago. When workers hacked the tree it started bleeding and they fell unconscious. The timber merchant rushed to the spot and prayed to Devi for forgiveness. Devi relented and the tree stopped bleeding. Ever since the tree is also worshipped just like Devi is. Devi is called 'Kunnekattu Bhagavathi' since she resides in a forest area on a hilltop or 'Kunnu'. She is also called 'Kudakkattu Bhagavathi' because of the umbrella's legend. May Sri Kunnekattu Bhagavathi bless one and all.
