Aadi Story

There was a loving couple called Kannagi and Kovalan. Kovalan soon fell on bad ways and left Kannagi for a dancer. He returned to Kannagi when he became penniless and they set out to Madurai to sell her anklets. But the anklets of the queen of Madurai that were stolen looked similar to Kannagi's and Kovalan was beheaded by soldiers. Kannagi cursed the city of Madurai.She is believed to have been endowed with the divinity of Parvati Devi and is worshipped as Bhadrakali at Attukkal and Kodungallur. Attukkal Pongala is mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the single largest religious gathering of women.
