Aadi Story

A demon called Arunasura terrorized the earth and brought about drought & destruction. Kamadhenu's daughter Nandini was asked to come to earth for a yaga but was cursed to be born as a river on earth when she refused. When she emerged as a river the sages performed the yaga and all drought was removed. Durga Devi appeared in Arunasura's garden as a beautiful woman whom he approached & chased. He had a boon that he could not be killed by any 2/4 legged creature or weapon. So Devi turned into a rock, emerging from the middle of river Nandini, which he struck with his sword. Devi at once emerged in the form of thousands of bees from the rock(6 legged creature) & stung him to death. Since 'Kati' means 'middle' & 'ila' means land, the place is called Kateel. The rock mentioned above can be found outside the temple. May Kateel Durga Parameshwari bless us all.
