Swami Saranam Series part 31

Arattupuzha Sri Dharma Sastha Temple.

The Arattupuzha Sri Dharma Sastha temple is situated at Arattupuzha, 16 km from Thrissur, on the banks of the Karuvannur river. It is one of Kerala's most ancient temples, with a history believed to date back nearly 3000 years.

Sri Dharma Sastha is the presiding deity here, in a standing position, holding a bow & arrow. The deity is believed to be an embodiment of the power of Maharshi Vasishtha, the great Guru of Lord Sri Rama. Arattupuzha was believed to be the meeting place of all the Gods & Goddesses until floods ravaged the area and the venue of the grand Pooram, or festival was shifted to Thrissur city. Still, Arattupuzha Pooram is the oldest temple festival of Kerala, & is celebrated as grandly as ever.

It is called 'Deva Mela' as it is believed that a 101 deities from nearby villages visit Sri Dharma Sastha during this time. Deities from most of the temples around Arattupuzha & Thrissur city take part in this 7 day festival in the month of March. On the 6th day, 61 beautifully decorated elephants assemble in the temple grounds to the accompaniment of traditional music such as Panchavadyam (musical pieces played using 5 traditional instruments). On the 7th day, the festive deity is bathed in the waters of the Karuvannur river.

May Kaliyuga Varada, the one who delivers us from all troubles & sins in the age of Kali, bless one and all.
