Ayyappa & St. Sebastianos

Nowhere is religious tolerance & brotherhood illustrated more perfectly than at Ayyappa's divine abode at Sabarimala. The following story illustrates how Ayyappa Himself set the precedent for this manifestation of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam - the whole earth is my family'.

While studying at the Kalari at Cheerappanchira, Ayyappa befriended a Catholic boy called Sebastianos who became a great companion & devotee of Ayyappa. Ayyappa blessed him saying that those who came to worship Him would worship Sebastianos as well, & attain fulfilment. He is worshipped at the Arthunkal church in Cherthala taluka of Alleppey district as St. Sebastianos.

People who have recovered from serious illnesses or closely escaped accidents often visit this shrine to offer thanks. It is believed that the saint has powers to cure the crippled, maimed & those affected by mental diseases. People of all faiths worship St. Sebastianos with equal faith & devotion.
