Victory over Vavar

Vavar (the name can be split as 'Vavu' meaning 'moon' + 'vindavar' meaning 'one who splits') was an Arabian trader who landed on the shores of Panthalam with the intent of plundering the kingdom. He fought a long drawn battle with Lord Ayyappa, but had to eventually accept defeat. On realising the divinity of Manikantha, Vavar bowed down to the Lord, asked for forgiveness & that he be allowed to serve the Lord for the rest of his life. From then on, Vavar became the most trusted lieutenant & friend of Manikantha & the kingdom of Panthalam. He helped save the kingdom from many invasions by outsiders. Rajasekhara is even believed to have said to Manikantha - 'Consider Vavar as myself'.

At Erumeli, the gateway to Sabarimala, there is a huge mosque for Vavar next to the Kiratha Sastha Temple. It is said that Lord Ayyappa Himself instructed His foster father Rajasekhara to construct a mosque for Vavar. There is another smaller shrine for Vavar at Sabarimala next to the shrine for Lord Ayyappa. Here there is just a small stone slab worshipped as Vavar & no idol, in accordance with Muslim religious practices. A green silk cloth is hung across one of the 3 walls, the 4th side being open. Vavar's sword hangs on the wall, symbolizing his bravery & valour. A Muslim priest performs the rituals & black pepper is the main offering here.

May the friend of Vavar protect one and all.
